PROFESSIONAL LICENSURE DISCLOSURE
South College offers several programs leading to professional licensure within the State of Tennessee. Several
programs leading to professional licensure are also offered in Georgia, Florida, Indiana, and Pennsylvania.
Several graduate programs/courses are offered in an online/hybrid format and students may live in a variety of
states. States vary in what professions they require to be licensed and how licensure functions, with some states
requiring only registration. Some states require an individual to graduate from an approved or accredited
program. Others require an individual to “meet [the] certification requirements of a national organization.” A
specific amount of training can also be required, as well as successful passing of an exam based on a nationally
required exam score. It is not uncommon that professionals must complete continuing education on an annual or
otherwise basis.
South College is an institutional participant in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity
Agreements (SARA). SARA is an agreement among member states, districts, and territories that establishes
comparable national standards for interstate offering of post-secondary distance education courses and programs.
It is intended to make it easier for students to take online courses offered by post-secondary institutions based in
another state. SARA covers all interstate placements in clinical or practica situations among SARA member
states, no matter the nature of the main program. However, some such placements may also be subject to the
rules of professional licensing boards, in which case the placement must also meet such requirements. For the
most current information regarding the members of SARA, please visit the below: http://nc-sara.org/state-
actions/state-actions-regarding-sara. For more information about SARA, please visit http://www.nc-sara.org/.
Important Note for Prospective Students: If considering an academic program that leads to a professional
license in your planned state of residence, it is highly recommended that you first seek guidance from the
appropriate licensing agency in that state BEFORE beginning the academic program located outside that state. It
is the student’s responsibility to contact the appropriate licensing board to confirm whether a South College
program will meet the requirements for licensure in that state. South College will assist with this information.
For onground/hybrid programs, the institution ensures that the program meets requirements for the state in which
the campus is located.
Important note for students interested in pursuing School of Education programs: Educator licensure and
certification are regulated individually by State Departments of Education. Students who seek admission to any
School of Education program should contact their home state’s Department of Education for applicable
requirements rules and regulations. Students are responsible for determining whether the South College program
will meet their home states’ requirements for certification, licensure, or other credential.
RELOCATION TO ANOTHER STATE - Students who consider moving to another state during their enrollment
at South College must consult with their academic advisor and the financial aid department prior to this move in
order to discuss the consequences of this move. Consideration of these consequences is very important and could
include loss of eligibility for federal student aid or, if applicable, rescheduling of clinical or other rotations if the
move is to a state in which the institution is not authorized. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the
appropriate licensing board in his/her home state to confirm whether a South College program will meet the
requirements for licensure in that state.
LICENSING DISCLOSURES
34 CFR 668.43(a)(5)(v) Professional Licensure/Certification (PLC) pre-education requirements
The South College curricula for programs normally leading to licensure in identified states have been designed to
meet the licensure/certification requirements in the states in which programs are located, as well as preparing
students to apply for certification exams required for licensure. The licensure boards in each state are responsible
for establishing the requirements for licensure/certification for their state. Students must review the professional
licensure disclosures pertaining to their program and consult with the state professional licensing board. The state
2
professional licensing boards make the final decision as to whether or not an individual is eligible for licensure
based on the requirements in place at the time the application for licensure is submitted.
Some state licensing boards require additional items outside of education, which may include, but are not limited
to, additional examinations or experience, payment of associated fees, criminal background checks, reference
checks, fingerprint submissions, drug screen, evidence of specific content such as ethics or completion of
required course, etc. Continuing education may also be required to maintain certification/licensure. Students
must make certain to review and understand any additional requirements prior to enrolling in a program.
State licensing requirements are always subject to change at the discretion of the state agency. South College will
routinely update this page, but students are strongly recommended to contact the applicable state board to
confirm eligibility for licensure prior to enrolling in a program.
Licensing requirements vary by state/territory and relocating could impact eligibility requirements for licensure.
For any questions about relocation eligibility, contact the agency in the state in which licensure is desired prior to
relocating to ensure eligibility for licensure or reciprocity. Carefully review the educational prerequisites for the
intended state/territory of licensure and whether the program meets those requirements for licensure. Use the
agency contact information provided below to clarify or confirm any requirements. If questions remain after
reviewing the information provided below, contact the program advisor.
To the best of the ability of South College, the information below indicates if the program curriculum Meets the
requirements in the identified states and US Territories, Does NOT Meet the requirement in these states and US
Territories, or Undetermined if the program has not yet determined if the curriculum requirements are met for
these states and US Territories.
The below information was updated as of requirements published as of May 2024.

Doctor of Pharmacy
Pharmacists must be licensed by the state in which they intend to practice. Licensure laws and regulations for
Pharmacists vary from state to state. Statutory and regulatory requirements for initial licensure and license
renewal can be found at each state’s Board of Pharmacy website. A reference for each state Board of Pharmacy
is available at the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) website located here
https://nabp.pharmacy/about/boards-of-pharmacy/
. In general, the North American Pharmacist Licensure
Examination (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE) are required prior to
licensure. Exceptions to this can be found here
https://nabp.pharmacy/programs/mpje/. Graduation from an
ACPE-accredited program is a requirement for licensure in all 50 states and U.S. jurisdictions. The South
College School of Pharmacy program is accredited by ACPE. We work diligently with all students in preparation
for licensure/certification examinations, however, graduation does not guarantee a passing score.
Students participating in clinical learning experiences outside of Tennessee must comply with each state’s rules
for intern licensure. The South College School of Pharmacy Office of Clinical Education requires that students
attain intern licensure prior to any out of state learning experiences. Information on intern licensure
requirements can be found at each state’s Board of Pharmacy website.

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT)
The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program is a professional doctoral program preparing graduates for licensure in
all states and several US territories following passing of the NPTE exam and completion of any state-specific
juris prudence examination. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy
Education (CAPTE) which is recognized by the US Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for
Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
Licensure as a Physical Therapist is regulated by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy while
individual states are typically overseen by a State Board of Physical Therapy. All 50 states and several US
territories require graduation from a CAPTE accredited program, as well as passing the NPTE in order to obtain
a license and practice as a Physical Therapist. The South College DPT program in Knoxville is a CAPTE
accredited program, and the programs at the Atlanta and Nashville campuses are candidates for accreditation.
The programs aim to prepare graduates to sit for the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE). We work
diligently with all students in preparation for licensure/certification examinations, however, graduation does not
guarantee a passing score. Some states have unique additional licensure requirements. For example, a
jurisprudence exam is required in some states to test the graduate’s knowledge of state laws, rules, and practice
acts that govern physical therapy practice. Some require additional satisfactory background checks. These
unique requirements are not associated with preparation in the South College program. The following link
provides contact information for individual state licensing authorities:
https://www.fsbpt.org/FreeResources/LicensingAuthoritiesContactInformation.aspx. Individuals should review
requirements for the desired state or territory PRIOR to beginning the South College program.

Doctor of Nursing Practice w/Concentration Nurse Anesthesia
Certificate in Nurse Anesthesia (Post-DNP)
The South College DNP Nurse Anesthesia Program (NAP) is a Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia
Educational Programs (COA) accredited program which aims to prepare graduates to sit for the National
Certification exam (NCE). The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) is
nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education
Accreditation (CHEA) as an accrediting agency for the “accreditation of institutions and programs of nurse
anesthesia at the post-master’s certificate, master’s, or doctoral degree levels in the United States, and its
territories, including programs offering distance education.”
Licensure as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is regulated by individual states and is overseen
by State Boards of Nursing. All 50 states require graduation from a COA accredited program and a passing score
on the National Certification Exam (NCE) to obtain licensure and practice as a CRNA. The NCE is administered
by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA). Further
information regarding the NCE can be obtained at https://www.nbcrna.com/initial-certification. The South
College DNP Nurse Anesthesia Program (NAP) is a COA accredited program which aims to prepare graduates to
sit for the NCE; however, graduation from the DNP NAP does not guarantee a passing score on the NCE. Some
states have unique licensure requirements; these unique requirements are not associated with preparation in the
South College DNP Nurse Anesthesia Program and must be met by the graduate. Information on individual state
licensing requirements may be obtained at https://www.ncsbn.org/14730.htm.

Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Practitioner
The South College MSN and Post-Graduate Certificate programs are Commission on Collegiate Nursing
Education (CCNE) accredited programs which aim to prepare graduates to sit for associated National
Certification exams (NCE). CCNE is nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) as an
accrediting agency for the “accreditation of nursing education programs in the United States, at the
baccalaureate, master’s, doctoral and certificate levels, including programs offering distance education.”
Registered nurses must be licensed by the state in which they intend to practice. Licensure laws and regulations
vary from state to state. In order to be admitted to the South College MSN program, applicants must provide
evidence of a current unencumbered Registered Nurse license or in progress of becoming licensed as a
Registered Nurse as verified by Nursys (https://www.nursys.com) or licensure verification system provided by
individual State Boards of Nursing. Additional licensure may be required if practicum courses are completed in a
state other than the state where the student already holds licensure.
Graduates of the MSN w/Concentration in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Certificate in
Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (Post-Graduate) programs will meet the requirements to sit for
Consensus Model-based ACNPC-AG certification exam administered by the American Association of Critical-
Care Nurses (AACN) or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (AACC).
Graduates of the MSN w/Concentration in Nurse Executive and Certificate in Nurse Executive (Post-Graduate)
programs may seek Nurse Executive board certification from The American Nurses Credentialing Center
(ANCC) or The American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) provided that they meet the practice
requirements. Requirements for certification include varying combinations of requirements depending upon the
certification sought but generally include requirement to hold a current RN license, minimum educational level
in nursing, specified time/hours of experience in nursing management/supervision, and continuing education
credits if a master’s degree has not been earned.
Graduates of the MSN w/Concentration in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Certificate in Family Nurse
Practitioner (Post-Graduate) programs will meet the requirements to sit for the American Nurses Credentialing
Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) FNP national certification
examination.
Graduates of the MSN w/Concentration in Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Certificate in Pediatric Nurse
Practitioner (Post-Graduate) programs will meet the requirements to sit for the Pediatric Nursing Certification
Board (PNCB) PNP national certification examination.
Graduates of the MSN w/Concentration in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Certificate in
Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner programs will meet the requirements to sit for the American Nurses
Credentialing Center (ANCC) PMHNP certification examination and American Academy of Nurse Practitioners
(AANP) PMHNP examination.
We work diligently with all students in preparation for licensure/certification examinations, however, graduation
does not guarantee a passing score.

Master of Health Science in Physician Assistant Studies
The South College MHS in Physician Assistant Studies programs are approved by the Accreditation Review
Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) Knoxville/Atlanta (Accreditation-
Continued), Nashville (Accreditation-Provisional), and Asheville-Provisional). The ARC-PA is recognized by
the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as an accrediting agency for “programs preparing
individuals for entry into PA practice located in institutions in the US that are accredited by recognized regional
accrediting bodies.”
PAs must be licensed by the state in which they intend to practice before seeing patients. State laws and
regulations for Physician Assistants vary from state to state. Statutory and regulatory requirements for initial
licensure and license renewal for each state can also be found via this link
- https://www.aapa.org/download/19739/. Graduation from an ARC-PA accredited program meets initial
licensure requirements for all states and the passing of the PANCE national certification exam is
required. Another resource is https://www.nccpa.net/become-certified. We work diligently with all students in
preparation for licensure/certification examinations, however, graduation does not guarantee a passing score.

Indi
vidual State Boards of Nursing uses the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX®) prepared by
National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) to measure competence for entry-level practice for
graduates of pre-licensure nursing education programs. Professional nurses are prohibited in all states from
practicing nursing until the NCLEX® examination is successfully completed and licensure has been granted.
We work diligently with all students in preparation for licensure/certification examinations, however, graduation
does not guarantee a passing score.
Upon completion of degree requirements, each student enrolled in the BSN, ASN, PN programs must make
application to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN for BSN and ASN and NCLEX-
PN for Certificate PN). Professional nurses are prohibited in all states from practicing nursing until the
examination is successfully completed and licensure has been granted. Specific information regarding licensure
will be provided to the student during the last quarter of the nursing program. We work diligently with all
students in preparation for licensure/certification examinations, however, graduation does not guarantee a
passing score.
State Boards of Nursing have the responsibility and right to deny licensure to persons who have been convicted
of a crime other than a minor traffic violation. Persons having a criminal record should consult the Rules and
Regulations of the applicable state Board of Nursing.
The “SAVE Act” requires Tennessee Department of Health (including all Boards, Commissions, and
contractors), along with every local health department in the State, to verify that every adult applicant for a
24
professional license is either a U.S. citizen, a “qualified alien,” or a nonimmigrant who meets the requirements
set out at 8 U.S.C. 1621. For more information, please visit http://www.tn.gov/health/article/nursing-
applications.
For more detailed information about the NCLEX, please visit the website of National Council of State Boards of

Note: Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Indiana are Compact States. Graduates may seek
licensure in these states and apply for a multistate license with other Compact States. Many states that
are not Compact States have provision to apply for licensure by endorsement. Gaining Tennessee, North
Carolina, Georgia, Florida, or Indiana licensure is the foundation for applying in this manner. The BSN,
ASN, and PN programs are approved in Pennsylvania pending implementation of Compact legislation.
Other states also have pending Compact legislation.

Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene
The South College AS in Dental Hygiene program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation
(CODA). The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of
Education.
Licensure is granted by each individual state. Dental Hygienists practice in accordance with requirements of
individual state dental practice acts.
In virtually every state, several steps are required before a license can be granted:
Graduation from an accredited Dental Hygiene program
Successful completion of the written National Board Dental Hygiene Examination
Successful completion of a regional or state clinical board examination
Successful completion of the Dental Anesthesia Certification Course within the program
Successful completion of the Nitrous Oxide Monitoring and Administration Certification Course within
the program
We work diligently with all students in preparation for licensure/certification examinations, however, graduation
does not guarantee a passing score.
As licensing requirements vary from state to state, it is necessary to contact each licensing authority in a given
state for its specific application requirements and procedures.
Typically, state boards have the authority to deny a license to an applicant who has committed an act for which
the board could revoke a license. Persons convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor may be refused
licensure, as well as those disciplined on the license application about prior convictions, discipline, etc. Most
states conduct background checks on a case-by-case basis and may take into consideration the seriousness of the
offense and other factors in making the decision to grant or withhold licensure.

Associate of Science in Occupational Therapy Assistant
The South College OTA programs are ACOTE-accredited programs which aim to prepare graduates to sit for the
NBCOT certification examination.
All states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam require occupational therapy assistants to be
licensed. All state occupational therapy regulatory agencies have several core licensing requirements. The core
licensing requirements includes graduation from an ACOTE accredited educational program, completion of
fieldwork requirements, and passing the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)
Examination, along with the completion of an initial license application and paid associated fee for each state or
jurisdiction the person wishes to practice or hold a license. Additional state licensure requirements may vary and
can include required satisfactory background checks or a jurisprudence exam to test the graduate’s knowledge of
state laws, rules, and practice acts that govern occupational therapy practice. These unique requirements are not
associated with preparation in the South College program.
Students convicted of a felony or misdemeanor may
be excluded from field experiences and/or taking the certification examination.
We work diligently with all
students in preparation for licensure/certification examinations, however, graduation does not guarantee a
passing score.

Associate of Science in Physical Therapist Assistant
Licensure as a Physical Therapist Assistant is regulated by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy
while individual states are typically overseen by a State Board of Physical Therapy. All 50 states require
graduation from a CAPTE accredited program, as well as passing of the NPTE-PTA, in order to obtain a license
and practice as a Physical Therapist Assistant. The South College PTA programs are accredited or in pursuit of
accreditation from CAPTE with the aim to prepare graduates to sit for the National Physical Therapy
Examination (NPTE-PTA). Some states have unique licensure requirements. For example, a jurisprudence exam
is required in some states to test the graduate’s knowledge of state laws, rules, and practice acts that govern
physical therapy practice (this is currently required in Georgia and North Carolina but not in Tennessee). Some
require satisfactory background checks. These unique requirements are not associated with preparation in the
South College program. The following link provides contact information for individual state licensing
authorities: https://www.fsbpt.org/Free-Resources/Licensing-Authorities-Contact-Information. We work
diligently with all students in preparation for licensure/certification examinations, however, graduation does not
guarantee a passing score.

Associate of Science in Respiratory Therapy
The Respiratory Therapy program is an associate degree program preparing graduates for licensure in required
states and several US territories following passing of the NBRC exam. The program is pursuing accreditation by
the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care which is recognized by the US Department of Education
(USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Licensure as a Respiratory Therapist is
regulated by individual states with the exception of Alaska - 49 states and several US territories require
graduation from a CoARC accredited program, as well as passing the NBRC exam (CRT or RRT state specific)
in order to obtain a license and practice as a Respiratory Therapist. The South College Respiratory Therapy
program aims to prepare graduates to sit for the National Board for Respiratory Care Examination (NBRC). We
work diligently with all students in preparation for licensure/certification examinations, however, graduation
does not guarantee a passing score. Some states have unique additional licensure requirements. The following
link provides contact information for individual state licensing authorities:

Individuals should review requirements for the desired state or territory PRIOR to beginning the South College
program.
South College is currently in the process of seeking CoARC accreditation for a respiratory care
program. However, South College can provide no assurance that accreditation will be granted by the CoARC.
Once CoARC accreditation is granted, completion of the Associate of Science Respiratory Therapy (ASRT)
program meets educational requirements to apply for registration or licensure as a respiratory therapist in each of
the 49 states requiring licensure (except Alaska).

Associate of Science in Surgical Technology
Currently there are no requirements for state licensure for Surgical Technologists. Professional certification is
required to practice as a Surgical Technologist. T
he National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical
Assisting currently sets certain eligibility criteria to take the surgical technology certification exam. Graduates of
an accredited program in surgical technology or surgical first assisting programs can take the exam with a
notarized letter from their program director stating their graduation date, with a copy of their transcript.
We work
diligently with all students in preparation for licensure/certification examinations, however, graduation does not
guarantee a passing score.
The Associate of Science in Surgical Technology program offered at the Knoxville and Asheville campuses is
accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (
www.caahep.org
) (25400
U.S. Highway 19 North, Suite 158, Clearwater, FL 33763, 727-210-2350), based upon the recommendation of
the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC-STSA).
The application and self-study for the Associate of Science in Surgical Technology program offered at the
Atlanta, Indianapolis, Nashville, Orlando, and Pittsburgh campuses to the Commission on Accreditation of
Allied Health Education Programs (
www.caahep.org
, 9355 113th St. N, #7709, Seminole, FL 33775, 727-210-
2350) has been submitted and a site visit scheduled for pursuing initial accreditation by the Commission on
Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. This step in the process is neither a status of accreditation
nor a guarantee that accreditation will be granted. Accreditation must be awarded to the program prior to
graduates being able to attempt the required certification examination to practice as a Surgical Technologist."
State Law Overview
The following states have passed laws related to the education and certification of surgical technologists. This
includes graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited surgical technology program, obtain the Certified Surgical
Technologist (CST®) credential from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
(NBSTSA), and maintain the CST® credential by completing mandatory continuing education (CE) hours.
NOTE: When a state passes this law, nothing in the law prevents an employer from requiring all of its surgical
technologist employees (not just new-hires) to meet the full requirements of the law regardless of whether the
employee fits into the “grandfathered” or “military” exceptions.
Indiana (2009)
Massachusetts (2012)
Nevada (2017)
New Jersey (2011)
New York (2015)
Oregon (2016)
Pennsylvania (2020)
South Carolina (2018)
Tennessee (2013)
Texas (2009)
Idaho (1991) Idaho has an administrative rule requiring that surgical technologists (referred to as “operating
room technicians” in the rule) either complete a CAAHEP-accredited program OR satisfy the NBSTSA
requirements for CST/certification.
The following states require surgical technologists to register in order to work in the state:
Colorado (2016) (CST not required for registration)
North Dakota (2011) (“Unlicensed Assistive Person” registry; CST not required for registration)
Washington (2010) (CST not required for registration)
The following states offer optional registration/title protection for surgical technologists:
Arkansas (2017) (Must be a CST in order to qualify for the registry/title protection)
Illinois (2004) (Must be a CST in order to qualify for the registry/title protection)
Virginia (2014) (Must be a CST in order to qualify for the registry/title protection)

Certificate in Dental Assisting
The Certificate in Dental Assisting program offered at South College is accredited by the Commission on Dental
Accreditation (CODA).
Dental Assistants practice in accordance with the requirements of individual State Dental Practice Acts. In some
states, Dental Assistant registration is required. The South College Dental Assisting graduate will be eligible for
registration by the Board of Dentistry and may perform additional procedures for which they have received
Board certification including:
Coronal Polishing
Nitrous Oxide Monitoring
Sealant Application
Dental Radiology
As licensing requirements vary from state to state, it is necessary to contact each licensing authority in a given
state for its specific application requirements and procedures. Typically, state boards have the authority to deny a
license to an applicant who has committed an act for which the board could revoke a license. Persons convicted
of a felony or serious misdemeanor may be refused licensure, as well as those disciplined on the license
application about prior convictions, discipline, etc. Most states conduct background checks on a case-by-case
basis and may take into consideration the seriousness of the offense and other factors in making the decision to
grant or withhold licensure.

Certificate in Nursing Assistant
The Certificate in Nursing Assistant program offered at South College is approved by the Tennessee Department
of Health - Board of Healthcare Facilities.
The mission of the Certificate in Nursing Assistant program is to prepare students with basic nursing skills
needed to work as a valuable member of the healthcare team. The curriculum is designed to provide foundational
training and skills needed in today’s competitive and evolving healthcare environments. Graduates will be
prepared to seek licensure as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
Upon completion of the Nursing Assistant program, graduates who pass the CNA test approved by the state of
Tennessee will obtain their CNA certificate and become eligible to work in long-term care facilities and other
health care environments in Tennessee.
